Braylon Edwards pleads not guilty to assault count

Former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards has
pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge after he
was accused of punching a man outside a downtown nightclub
last month. Edwards was arraigned in Cleveland Municipal
Court on Tuesday. The 26-year-old was traded to the New York
Jets two days after he was accused of punching a friend of
NBA star LeBron James on Oct. 5. James called Edwards' actions
"childish." Edwards waived his right to a speedy trial and
was scheduled for a Dec. 12 court hearing. His attorney
hasn't returned a request for comment. While with Cleveland,
Edwards dropped passes, criticized the team's play-calling,
argued with teammates and famously took a helicopter to a
college football game in 2006 despite being told not to go.

Bucs reinstate G Arron Sears

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have reinstated guard Arron Sears
to the team from the reserve/did not report list. Sears has
not been with the team since offseason workouts because of
personal reasons. The Bucs have not discussed specifics of
his situation. The third-year pro was placed on the
reserve/did not report list at the start of training
camp in July. The club said Tuesday it has a two-week
exemption in which Sears will not count toward the 53-man
roster. During that period, Sears is eligible to practice
and be involved in all team activities. A second-round pick
in the 2007 draft, Sears started 31 games in his first two
seasons.

Bengals release TE Utecht, WR Chatman

The Bengals have released tight end Ben Utecht and receiver
Antonio Chatman, both of whom were out for the season with
injuries. Utecht suffered a major concussion during training
camp at Georgetown College and was taken off the field on a
stretcher. He stayed overnight in a hospital for observation,
and his symptoms were slow to diminish. He was placed on the
injured reserve list on Aug. 31. Chatman suffered a severe
ankle injury during practice and went on injured reserve on
Sept. 5. The Bengals also signed safety Brannon Condren to
their practice squad on Tuesday. He opened the season with
Indianapolis, but was waived on July 29.

Westbrook to visit concussion specialists

Eagles running back Brian Westbrook will visit two concussion
specialists in Pittsburgh on Wednesday. Westbrook sustained
his second concussion in three weeks during Philadelphia's
31-23 loss at San Diego on Sunday. The 30-year-old former
All-Pro suffered his first career concussion on Oct. 26
against Washington. Westbrook first will consult with
neuropsychologist Mark R. Lovell, head athletic trainer
Rick Burkholder says in a statement. After that visit,
Westbrook and Lovell will meet with neurosurgeon Joseph
Maroon. Burkholder says Lovell has been consulting with the
Eagles' medical staff on Westbrook's recovery since his
first concussion.

Tequila sues Chargers OLB Merriman

Reality TV star Tila Tequila filed a lawsuit against San Diego
Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman alleging domestic violence.
Attorney Cyrus Nownejad told The Associated Press that Tequila
is seeking $1.5 million in damages. Merriman was arrested by
sheriff's deputies on Sept. 6 after Tequila signed a citizen's
arrest warrant accusing him of battery and false imprisonment
at his suburban home. District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis declined
to charge Merriman. Merriman told the AP in an e-mail that he
hadn't seen a copy of the suit. His attorney didn't immediately
return a call seeking comment Tuesday. Tequila, whose real name
is Tila Ngyuen, alleges assault, battery, false imprisonment
and intentional infliction of emotional distress. She said that
when she tried to leave his house, Merriman grabbed her by her
arms. When she tried to break free, Merriman shook her like a
rag doll, the suit said. Merriman threw her onto a couch,
hurting her neck, jaw and back, then choked her until she
almost passed out, the suit alleges. Tequila said in the lawsuit
that Merriman had a short temper, used drugs and humiliated her
because of her bisexuality. The lawsuit includes two exhibits
of photos, including photos purporting to show bruises on
Tequila's arms and neck.

Browns coach sorry about last-second injury

Following wide receiver Josh Cribbs' scary last-second injury,
Browns coach Eric Mangini said he wishes he would have handled
the final play of Monday night's game differently. Cribbs was
taken to a hospital after he was flattened on a last, meaningless
play in Baltimore's 16-0 win over the Browns. Mangini called it
a "competitive situation" and said Cribbs improvised on the pass
play by lateraling the ball before being hit by Ravens defensive
end Dwan Edwards. Mangini said Cribbs did not sustain a concussion.
He's optimistic that his best playmaker will be available for
Sunday's game in Detroit. Mangini would not say if he thought
Edwards' hit was dirty. He did defend Browns quarterback
Brady Quinn's questionable chop block on Ravens linebacker
Terrell Suggs following an interception. Mangini said he
believed Quinn's assertion that he was going after cornerback
Chris Carr, who made the pick in the third quarter. Quinn was
penalized 15 yards for a low block and could face a league
fine. Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis accused Quinn of a cheap shot.
