Browns' Barton done for season

The Cleveland Browns have lost their leading tackler for the
second time this season. Eric Barton was placed on injured
reserve Tuesday with an unspecified injury, leaving the
Browns without their two starting inside linebackers for
the final eight games this season. D'Qwell Jackson suffered
a season-ending shoulder injury that required surgery last
month. In announcing Barton was done for the year, the Browns
did not reveal his injury or a timetable for his return.
ESPN.com had previously reported that the 32-year-old Barton
has a bulging disc in his neck and was contemplating surgery.
Barton, one of 10 former New York Jets brought to Cleveland
by coach Eric Mangini, started all eight games for Cleveland.
He was injured in the first half of a Nov. 1 loss at Chicago.
"I feel bad for Eric because I know how much passion he has
for the game and what it means to him," Mangini said in a
statement. "His ability to run the defense and allow those
around him to play better will be greatly missed." Mangini
would not comment during the team's bye week about reports
Barton had a serious neck injury. With Barton out, the
Browns likely will use a combination of rookies David
Veikune and Kaluka Maiava on the inside of their 3-4
defensive scheme with Jason Trusnik and Blake Costanzo
also getting time. Outside linebacker David Bowens has
played some inside linebacker this season. The Browns, who
host Baltimore on Monday night, also signed running back
Thomas Brown to the practice squad and released receiver
Darnell Jenkins from the practice squad.

Patriots sign LB Williams to practice squad

The New England Patriots have signed linebacker Thomas
Williams to the practice squad. The club says in a statement
released Tuesday that Williams joins the eight-man practice
squad after cornerback Kyle Arrington was promoted to the
53-man roster over the weekend. The 6-foot-1, 237 pounds
Williams was originally a fifth-round draft pick by Jacksonville
out of USC in 2008. He appeared in six games for the Jaguars
as a rookie. Williams was waived by Jacksonville before the start
of the season and spent time on the Seattle and Houston practice
squads.

McNair widow allowed to sell his restaurant

A Nashville judge has authorized the widow of retired NFL player
Steve McNair to sell the restaurant he opened shortly before he
was shot and killed. Probate Court Judge Randy Kennedy this
week cleared the sale of Gridiron9 by Mechelle McNair,
administrator of the ex-player's estate. According to court
records, a potential buyer has come forward. The judge denied
an appeal by one of Steve McNair's business partners.
The quarterback who spent most of his career with the
Tennessee Titans was shot to death July 4 by a young woman
who then killed herself. Earlier, a Nashville condominium
complex dropped its claim against the estate. McNair was a
co-signer on the lease of a condo for his cousin.

Tomlin won't discuss released Larry Johnson

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin isn't saying if the team has any
interest in Larry Johnson, the former Penn State running back
who was released by the Kansas City Chiefs. Still, the Steelers'
answer appears to be the same as it was in 2003: Johnson isn't
in their plans.Johnson, who has long wanted to play in Pittsburgh,
was cut Monday after being suspended by Kansas City for the
second time in a year. The Steelers have long stayed away from
signing troubled players, and they appear to be set at running
back with starter Rashard Mendenhall and backup Willie Parker.
"I don't discuss free agents," Tomlin said Tuesday, only a
few hours after the Steelers returned from their 28-10 victory
in Denver on Monday night. "That opens Pandora's box. I tend to
focus on the guys that are in our locker room." Tomlin made
similar comments when quarterback Michael Vick was on the
market last summer. The Steelers had no interest in Vick.
The Chiefs cut Johnson - who was 75 yards short of breaking
the team rushing record - two weeks after he posted a gay slur
on Twitter, insulted fans and questioned the competence of
coach Todd Haley. Haley's father, Dick, once was a Steelers
executive. Johnson was benched for three consecutive games
last season for violating team rules and NFL commissioner
Roger Goodell suspended him a fourth game for violating the
league's player-conduct policy. Johnson believed he was going
to be drafted by Pittsburgh in 2003, but the Steelers traded
with Kansas City to move up in the first round and take safety
Troy Polamalu. Kansas City chose Johnson with the pick that
was to have been Pittsburgh's, with the running back clearly
upset he didn't go to the Steelers. Johnson was an all-state
running back at State College (Pa.) High, which is located
135 miles from Pittsburgh. He stayed at home to play for
Penn State, where he gained 2,087 yards in 2002.

Appeals court agrees Vick can keep $16M in bonuses

A federal appeals court on Tuesday backed the judge who ruled
against the NFL and let quarterback Michael Vick keep more than
$16 million in roster bonuses from the Atlanta Falcons.
The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday affirmed
Judge David Doty's order saying Vick had already earned the
bonuses before his dogfighting conviction, so the money wasn't
subject to forfeiture. Vick served 18 months in prison and is
now with the Philadelphia Eagles. Doty has long handled matters
arising from the NFL's collective bargaining agreement. After
Doty ruled in the Vick bonus case, the NFL accused him of bias
and sought to end his oversight of its contract with the players
union. The appeals court said the contract should remain
under Doty's oversight. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello did not say
whether the league planned a further appeal, but he said the
8th Circuit upheld Doty's ruling on Vick's bonuses in large
part because it found the contract's forfeiture language
ambiguous. "That is something that we will seek to change at
the bargaining table to ensure that bonus payments are paid
to players who comply with their contracts and perform on the
field," Aiello said. Vick, a former Atlanta Falcons star, was
released from federal custody July 20 after serving 18 months
of a 23-month sentence for running a dogfighting ring in Surry
County, Va. The Eagles signed Vick to a $1.6 million contract
for 2009, with a team option for the second year at $5.2
million, but he has not played much.
