Greetings fellow Bizarros:

Somebody mailed me a list of "Sixty Amazing-but-True Facts"
which I was very interested in reading. I'm always on the
lookout for bizarre "factoids" that I can share with you.

The first few were certainly bizarre, but seemingly within
the realm of reality, such as, "Male rhesus monkeys often
hang from tree branches by their amazing prehensile
penises."

Or...

"SCUBA divers cannot pass gas at depths of 33 feet or
below."

But after the first dozen they became so ridiculous as to
be completely unbelievable. However, they still have some
entertainment value. So I have listed a few of the high-
lights for you below.

-------------------------------------

The first McDonald's restaurant opened for business in 1952
in Edinburgh, Scotland, and featured the McHaggis sandwich.

The typewriter was invented by Hungarian immigrant Qwert
Yuiop, who left his "signature" on the keyboard.

The volume of water that the Giant Sequoia tree consumes in
a 24-hour period contains enough suspended minerals to pave
17.3 feet of a 4-lane concrete freeway.

Because printed materials are being replaced by CD-ROMs,
microfiche and the Internet, libraries that previously sank
into their foundations under the weight of their books are
now in danger of collapsing in extremely high winds.

In 1843, a Parisian street mime got stuck in his imaginary
box and consequently died of starvation.
[This one I kind of believe.]

Until 1978, Camel cigarettes contained minute particles of
real camels.

University of Virginia researchers released a study
promoting the practice of nose picking, claiming that
the health benefits of keeping nasal passages free from
infectious blockages far outweigh the negative social
connotations.

If you put a bee in a film canister for two hours, it
will go blind and leave behind its weight in honey.
[Seems like somebody forgot about the Conservation of
Matter law.]

Due to the angle at which the optic nerve enters the brain,
staring at a blue surface during sex greatly increases the
intensity of orgasms.
[Get out the paint brushes and rollers, boys.]

In WWII the US military planned to airdrop over France
propaganda in the form of Playboy magazine, with coded
messages hidden in the models' turn-ons and turn-offs.
The plan was scrapped because of a staple shortage due
to rationing of metal.
[That would have been quite an achievement since Playboy
was founded by Hugh Hefner in 1953.]

Although difficult, it's possible to start a fire by
rapidly rubbing together two Cool Ranch Doritos.

Well, folks, cram that index finger up your nose and
careful while eating your Doritos, it's time for Bizarre
News.

Bizarrely,

Lewis

------------ Nun stops theft with stern voice ------------

PITTSBURGH - A nun who serves as principal of a Pittsburgh
school said she stopped a thief with a single sentence:
"You need to give me what you have." Sister Lynn Rettinger,
principal of Sacred Heart Elementary School in the Shady-
side neighborhood, said preschool teacher Donna Caligiuri
called to her at about 2:05 p.m. Tuesday and said a man
had taken a wallet out of a purse in an unlocked car, the
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Thursday. Rettinger, who
was wearing white slacks and a blue jacket with her
Sisters of Charity pin, said she walked out the front door
and spoke to the man from the top of the steps. "I said to
him, 'You need to give me what you have.' That's what I
say to children if I know they have something they
shouldn't. I say, 'You need to give me what's in your
pocket,'" Rettinger said. "He gave it to me, and then he
apologized," she said. She said the man walked away calmly.
"He didn't even run," she said.

-------- Man follows noisy muffler to stolen truck --------

LONGVIEW, Wash. - A Washington state man who heard someone
stealing his truck from outside his home said he followed
the sound of the muffler to pursue the thieves. Alex
Hansen, 27, said he heard the 1996 Toyota T-100 starting
at 5 a.m. Tuesday outside of his Longview home and quickly
gave chase, The (Longview) Daily News reported. "I grabbed
my girlfriend's keys. My truck's loud enough I could hear
where it was going," Hansen said. He said he spotted the
Toyota traveling together with another vehicle. "I caught
up about the time they got to Alabama," he said. "I chased
them 8 minutes or so down alleyways and streets... He just
locked the truck up, jumped out and took off running."
Hansen described the suspect who exited the truck as a
white man with a black hoodie, shorts and a backwards cap.
He said the culprits took tools, a camera, his wallet and
other valuables from the vehicle.

Lewis: You obviously have had only negative experiences
with the law enforcement officers during you life. Is
that because of your "Cadwick-like" activities? Are you
a wienie waver like TZ? You have little or no understanding
of police work. The primary function of the police is "the
prevention of criminality." Attitudes like yours are why
they normally only associate with fellow officers and their
families. They get awfully tired of going to a party and
when it is found out what they do for a living, they
immediately hear about all the bum tickets received by
their fellow partiers. Sheesh, only a small percentage of
their time is spent in traffic enforcement. Most policeman
go their entire careers without ever firing their sidearm
in the line of duty. -David Fenner (a former SoCal cop)
[I know several cops. A couple of them for years. And I'm
well aware of what they do on a daily basis. That doesn't
change a single thing of what I wrote in the last issue.]

Hello Lewis. As a thought experiment what do you see as the
result of money as the world understands it (a man made
commodity), as well as all debt from bottom up disappeared
globally. No one stole it, debts just were erased, money no
longer existed, from the smallest accounts on up. There was
a resource economy so that you may psychologically accept
this enough to consider it. If the vanishing stopped at the
top, whom do you think would be left holding the owe sheet?
As a thought experiment. -Love, Bette
[If it were strictly a matter of resources the United States
would be close to the top...our biggest disadvantage, of
course, being energy poor. But money is too important and
universal a concept to just disappear. You can get more out
of this exercise if you tried to consider what a free energy
society might be like...!]

Lewis, here's one for you: SOUTHWORTH ? A man trying to
loosen a stubborn lug nut blasted the wheel with a 12-gauge
shotgun, injuring himself badly in both legs. The 66-year-
old man had been repairing a Lincoln Continental for two
weeks at his home and had gotten all but one of the lug
nuts off the right rear wheel before getting frustrated.
From about arm's length, the man fired the shotgun at the
wheel and was "peppered" in both legs with shot and other
debris, with some injuries as high on his body as his chin.
[Yes, but did the nut come off?]

As a first time reader of your newsletter I must say that
it all is very intersting and that I look foraward to more.

[It's always a little difficult the first time, Krsitin, but
it gets better...wait a minute...are we talking about the
same thing?]
