Matthew 5:3
Blessed are the poor in spirit,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Greetings Bible Enthusiast!
A reader wondered, "What does 'poor in spirit' mean"? I have heard it taught that 'poor in spirit' is a Greek idiom that means oppressed. This makes sense, if we look at Luke 6:20, which states, "Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God."
Typically, (perhaps not always). poor people are oppressed, and often, oppressed people are poor. In this light, Matthew 5:3 does not mean that those lacking in spiritual maturity have the kingdom of heaven, but rather, those who are oppressed shall have the kingdom of heaven. Remember, we have to be ready to give up EVERYTHING.
God Bless You!
