Greetings...

Well, I have another thing on my mind which you may or may not agree
with. (how unusual huh?) Following a particular news story for a while
is what got me thinking about situations some people keep getting
themselves into and the ramifications of it all...

The story I'm talking about is the three hikers being held in Iran
and the possible release of the only female of the group. They have
been held for over a year in jail and are accused of spying, a charge
that is always used when this sort of thing happens and if you recall,
two journalists were held in North Korea a few years ago and finally
released after former President Clinton went and intervened on their
behalf...

Here's my question and thoughts...

WHY on earth would you take a chance of going anywhere near a country
that is run by mentally unbalanced and dangerous men in charge of
countries where human rights is an unknown thing and your life is in
serious jeopardy???

The hikers supposedly ventured from the Iraqi border into Iran by
accident and were taken into custody. Excuse me, while I can appreciate
their adventurous hobby of hiking, couldn't they find a better place to
hike, like the Matterhorn at Disneyland?

In the case of the two journalists working on an undercover story about
the horrific conditions in North Korea, did they ever think of the possible
dangers involved and the risk they put themselves in? I can appreciate
their need to show the world what is going on but based on what we already
know, don't you think we have an idea of how Kim Jong Illness treats his
people?

Can anyone tell me if it's worth risking being held in a country run by
AchmidinaNUTJOB? (Who cares if I just spelled that all terribly wrong)...

So what exactly has my goose in a gander? Does anyone think President
Clinton would fly over to help you or I? These two journalists worked
for Al Gore and one is the sister of Lisa Ling...

In the case of the girl held in Iran, she is being released when $500,000
bail is paid. Anyone around here have that kind of disposable cash lying
around in case I want to go jogging around the streets of Tehran? It's
not like she's going to go back for trial and get that money back for
her family...

Do these people who end up arrested even realize the grief they put
their families in and the sticky situation they can get in politically?
Sure, their families aren't the ones in the cells, but they may end up
in financial ruin when the dust settles from this. Flying back and forth,
hiring lawyers in a country that doesn't care or is too afraid to argue
their case under fear of "whatever"...

I don't mean to sound heartless here, but common sense and good judgement
should prevail before this happens and trust me, it will happen again
somewhere and of course, in a place that has some lunatic running the
country...

Maybe no one would come to my rescue if I was taken into custody in Iran
or Korea, then again...

I wouldn't be that STUPID to put myself at that risk...

:-)
