Greetings...
There is growing opposition to the newest security measure being used
in 133 airports around the country. Full-body imaging machines have
been installed in some airports with plans to increase the number to
1,000 by the end of the year. Phoenix happens to be one of those
airports with one of these contraptions...
THis machine scans the person and is a virtual strip search. The TSA is
deploying two types of machines that can see underneath clothing. One
uses a high-speed X-ray beam, and the other bounces electromagnetic
waves off a passenger's body. The person's whole body can be seen
which has raised privacy concerns as you can imagine...
Opponents to the machine claim it hasn't been tested enough and doesn't
guarantee that it could detect explosives. Although the TSA claims
otherwise, another concern is the immediate photo of the screened
person that is taken. TSA reps claim there is nothing in the machine
that can save pictures but given some of the buffoons I have seen
screening people at the airports, I will bet that we will hear of one
of them having a cellphone picture of someone for whatever reason. A
pretty woman, a celebrity, Lady Ga Ga's ta-ta's...
Passengers are also concerned about the amount of X-ray beams being
shot at them and if they are frequent fliers, that could amount to
a substantial amount. Pregnant women should also be concerned, although
eberyone has a right to refuse a full body scan and will receive a pat-
down search instead...
How much additional time will all of this be taking? As it is now, a one
hour flight will take up almost eight hours of your day with the added
airport lines and security. These scanners take longer than walking
through a metal detector. Will they arrest a woman who is using a
tampon and accuse her of trying to smuggle an explosive on board?
Probably not as far fetched as it sounds and that's the frightening
thing about this newest ploy to strip our rights with our clothes...
The cost of these "peeping Tom machines" aren't cheap either. The TSA
has already spent 80 million on 500 machines and of course, we all pay
for it in the excuse the pun...in the end...
If you're one who thinks our safety and security should come before any
of our own "discomforts", I'd just say this...
The TSA has proven time and time again that they miss things that are
carried onto the plane via carry on bags. I'll bet more items sneak on
by while they are looking at Grandma Zelda's (insert body part here)...
I'm against this and don't think anyone should have to give up their
modesty and privacy "for their own good"...
