October 1, 2010

Greetings...

I can't believe it's already October and the holidays are only a few
months away! It's probably harder to believe because it is going to be
107 degrees around here today...

The excessive heat can be used for various excuses for various things,
one of which is, in my case, "brain farts". This is a common occurrence
in certain editors of columns that have no real topic to discuss and
instead, will ramble about various things that pop in and out of their
minds and fingers...

My son Flypup is on the move again. He will be leaving Baltimore and
heading to Tallahassee, Florida this weekend. After last Winter in
the East, he was thrilled to get transferred back to Florida where he
first became a pilot...

My youngest, Dizzy, is doing well since he moved back to Chicago. He
and his father opened a business last month and even though it's
a totally new experience for my son, it has been a good one and I'm
seeing a transformation right before my eyes. I will admit though, I
sure do miss him terribly and miss him popping in just to say hello,
play with the dogs and "borrow" twenty bucks...

I realize I'm "older" and may sometimes come off as a "fuddy duddy"
when it comes to the younger generation, so I have a question for
anyone young enough to explain something to me...

Or, as Ricky said to Lucy...Splain This To Me...

Certain expressions come and go and that is something that has not
changed since all of us were young and growing up. One particular
expression I keep hearing makes me wonder, no... makes me understand,
why this generation is off the deep end...

The expression? "Shuuut uuuup"!!! Not as in "be quiet", but as an
expression like, "no kidding". It doesn't matter who is on the
receiving end of the expression or the age of the recipient, it's
thrown out with no thought and in fact, I witnessed a young girl
about 14 or 15 using it with her mom at the store the other day.
The mom didn't even flinch and they happily continued their conversation!

Call me a fuddy duddy, call me old-fashioned, call me out of touch with
the younger generation. The one thing you can't call me OR my boys is
disrespectful and if either one of them had said "shut uuuuup" to me
or any adult while they were growing up, they might have grown up missing
a few teeth! (That would have shuuuuut them up)...

I don't get it, and even saw a commercial for Dr. Scholl's with a
thirty-something woman using the phrase, so it's not reserved for teens...

Whoopty doo, this generation has mastered all the technology available to
them and what are they using it for? Texting, filming, online bullying
which has resulted in suicides as is evident by a current story in the
news as well as others...

They can barely read, spell, add, subtract, or identify a state or country
on a map, but they can sure tell you where Justin Bieber's newest pimple
popped up. All of us took part in pop culture when we were growing up
much to the chagrin of our own parents, but we still had certain guidelines
and rules we had to follow like it or not. The difference?

Our parents didn't want to be our best friends...

Oh well, I guess this rant is over, (for now). I'm glad I'm older,
my Uterus is somewhere at the Smithsonian and there's "no womb at the Inn"
because I think if I had to raise kids again today, I'd definitely
understand the need to be like certain species of animals that eat their
own young...

Shuuuut uuuuup, I did too just say that...

UGH!!!

:-)

Have a great weekend everyone!
