February 12, 2010
Greetings...
Many of my readers have "known" me for years through my columns,
and know how I feel about the upcoming "holiday" this weekend.
Sunday is Valentine's Day, or what I like to call the, "Spend
an excess of money to show that special someone you care"...
In the retail world, it is commonly known as, "We have suckered
the public into increasing our profits, and feeling guilty if
they don't"...
Since Christmas came and went, the barrage of Valentine commercials
for candy, flowers, jewelry, pajama grams, and whatever else you
can think of to inspire "romance" at a hefty price has flooded the
=
airwaves to the point of nausea...
I just don't understand how so many people can get suckered into
the frenzy of not only Valentine's day, but also Sweetest Day
that comes in October to help you remember the love of your life
again because everyone knows that we need retailers to remind us
how much we love our partners, and perish the thought that we are
capable of doing it on our own and not go bankrupt in the process...

These types of "holidays" are a sore spot to me and always have been.=
People are made to feel guilty if they don't make a big fuss over
the day, people feel sad because they may be alone and reminded of
it every 30 seconds while watching TV, and the biggest reason for me
feeling the way I do is this...
If you need someone to remind you that the person you are with is
important once a year, or twice if you count Sweetest Day, then
maybe you need someone to remind you the other 363 days of the year!
=
And before you start thinking I feel this way because I'm cheap, Flyboy's=
cheap, or neither one of us thinks the other one is "special", think=
again. I bought Flyboy a card and because he left today and won't be
home until Valentine's Day is over, I hid the card in his suitcase
before he left, and when I took a basket of laundry in the bedroom
to put away, there was a card on my pillow. Yes, you could say it's
because of Valentine's day, however...
Many times during the year I will hide a card or even a handwritten
note in his suitcase and find one hidden for me to find while he's
gone. Those are the "gifts" that I treasure and love...
OK, off my yearly soapbox. Do you think I'm wrong, or do you think the
=
whole thing is hogwash?

And for the American Idol fans out there, how do you think Ellen
DeGeneres did this week? I was pleasantly surprised and think she
balanced the humor with the critiques pretty good. I hope she
doesn't add much more humor than she did because it could get
distracting and take away from the main focus of the show. Although
I don't know the names of the contestants yet and we haven't really seen=
that many of them yet, I have my eye on three of the guys. "Big Mike"=
,
the guy that redid Paula Abdul's "straight Up", and the guy with the=
blonde hair. As for females, I know there are some very good singers,
but I'll have to wait until I see and hear more of them...
Maybe it's still too soon to judge, but I'll say it, I think Paula
Abdul is missed, (so far)...
And, even though it's still too soon to know who will replace Simon
who will DEFINITELY be missed, when I heard Howard Stern mentioned
as a replacement, I cringed. I don't think I can watch a show with
him anywhere near it. Not a fan of his at all!
Have a great weekend everyone and if you really have to "prove your
love" this weekend, try to hold off an extra day and save yourself
a few bucks, everything will be half-price the following day. Hahahaha
