August 11, 2010

Greetings...

I'd like to address an issue that has been generating some comments
in email. The issue is the mailings that have been coming to you with
a sales pitch for a specific item that happens to be offered that day...

I realize many of you aren't interested in these emails and have
voiced your displeasure in sometimes "not so nice" ways. Hey, I'm
all for free speech and my columns would certainly be VERY short
if I wasn't allowed to take advantage of that luxury!

However, there is another issue and that is the fact that since Gophercentral
started publishing newsletters many moons ago, the price of the newsletters
has remained the same...

How much has it cost subscribers to receive one, two, ten, newsletters?

Nada, zippo, nuthin'...

The advertisements in the columns were put there to generate revenue to
keep the cost the same to all of you, all of these years, and that cost?

Nada, zippo, nuthin'...

When the new format was introduced a few weeks ago, many of you were thrilled
that the advertisements were removed which made the newsletters an easier
read. The editors tried to explain that there would be separate mailings
advertising a certain deal and if it was something you might be interested
in, a link was provided to check it out. If it is something you wouldn't be
interested in, a simple "delete" would take care of it and although it
may take five seconds to hit the delete button and that's five seconds of
your life you will never get back, it is a business move that is needed
to keep the cost of the newsletters at the same rate they have always been,
and that cost again is...

Nada, zippo, nuthin'...

I realize there are some who will take great offense at my comments today
and of course, that is your right, but before I go I would like to make
one final comment on the subject. (Knowing me, it may end up two, or three)

One reader praised me for my columns all these years before telling me
how much the advertisement emails ticked her off. I appreciated the
compliment until the next sentence called the people at Gophercentral
"Schmucks" trying to make a buck...

These are employees of Gophercentral and as in any job, people are
assigned duties. They are not "schmucks", but real people who among
other job duties, write newsletters and are personally known to me.
They are just trying to do their jobs to the best of their ability to
provide for themselves as well as their families. With the economy and
the job situation the way it is, I highly doubt that any employee would
refuse to do a job assigned to them as long as they aren't being instructed
to break the law...

I guess I've rambled on long enough and would ask that anyone whose life
is being severly impacted by receiving an email containing an advertisement,
think about hitting the unsubscribe button. I respect your feelings on
the subject and know you are, and should be in charge of what you receive
in email. I just felt it my duty to explain why it is what it is...

Have a great day!

:-)

Your loveable schmuck
