July 5, 2010

Greetings...

Dizzy is safe and sound in Chicago and Flypup left yesterday and is
back in Baltimore. Saying good bye to two kids in one week wasn't
anything I would recommend. I'm OK, but I wonder if it really hasn't
hit me yet...

I've decided to do a follow-up on last week's column regarding reality
= shows and the disorders that spur them on. I received quite a bit of
mail on both sides of the argument and I have a feeling that some of
you may not have quite gotten some of the meaning behind my thoughts
on the subject...

While hoarders is what started the subject matter, I also mentioned
ADD and the over prescribing of Ritalin to a growing number of kids.
Many of you felt I ignored some true disorders that people genuinely
suffer from...

I concede there are severe disorders such as OCD, etc. What I was
getting at was a reality show that is based on a disorder and my
questioning the legitimacy of the severity of the disorders portrayed
in an age where ratings and money are motivating factors for people
to "behave" a certain way...

As far as hoarding, I think most of us have a little of that in us and
= if you recall my angst months ago over throwing away a favorite T-shirt=
even though it barely had any material left in spots, I could be a topic=
for a reality show that focuses on "people who can't throw away cotton= "...

One reader asked me what I thought of the people who watch reality shows.= ..

Hmmmm...Well Mike, it's a matter of personal choice and taste as to what=
people want to watch. What I watch may not be your cup of tea and I might=
not like to watch some TV shows you enjoy. If the ratings are high, this=
tells you there are plenty of people who enjoy reality shows. I guess I=
would be considered "guilty" because although I don't watch any of th= e
reality shows such as the "Housewives", Jersey Shore goofballs, or
= celebrity rehab people, I enjoy the cooking competition shows and up
until now, American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance. These are
considered reality shows. Watching reality shows doesn't mean you need
= psychiatric help...

However, all that aside, the real issue is one I have talked about for
= many years, and that is the OVER medicating of our society because
people can't cope, be responsible, discipline their children, etc.

I don't buy that men that repeatedly cheat on their partners deserve
an "out" by claiming they are sex addicts. What they may suffer from=
is "Barnyard Syndrome". The urge to act like a pig!!!

The medical profession has jumped to label all of those with "normal"=
everyday reality issues so that a "nice" little pill can be prescribe= d
to make everything OK. Drugs, that are pushed by legal drug pushers...
=
The drug companies. They solicit, they reward doctors with gifts, trips,=
and all sorts of "perks" with the goal of getting their meds prescrib= ed
and used...

If a small percentage of people legitimately suffer from a disorder that=
debilitates them and let's just say they represent 5% of the population,=
think of the profits the drug companies will have if 25% of the populatio= n
is diagnosed with a disorder and prescribed their drugs...

If you think I'm being cynical, I would just remind you that the treatmen= t
of disorders and diseases is big business. A cure is much less profitable= ...

Behavioral disorders are tricky because at any given moment, any one of=
us can exhibit behavior that may cause others to raise an eyebrow.
A raised eyebrow is fine and dandy, as long as there isn't someone who
= would profit by prescribing a pill that isn't needed...

I hope I have explained my point of view a little clearer because I sure=
wouldn't want someone to have to take a pill to handle what I said...

And, one more thing before I go. One reader took issue with what I said=
and felt that I was cold hearted about the subject because I have never=
been around a loved one who battled and suffered through drug or alcohol=
abuse...

Wrong...I've witnessed it plenty in my lifetime and could run seminars
= on the subject!
