June 9, 2010

Greetings...

Flyboy and I went to see Marmaduke Monday. We were looking forward
to seeing it as soon as the previews for it started coming out a
few weeks ago. One of the reasons we wanted to see it was because
the cartoon Marmaduke has always been a favorite of ours going
back to the time I never had a Great Dane or even met one. The
second reason, of course, is that we're suckers for Great Danes as
everyone knows...

I'll play movie critic here for a minute. It wasn't very good, in
fact, it bordered on boring aside from enjoying the beauty of the
dog that played Marmaduke. The story line was weak at best and
if you saw Beverly Hills Chihuahua, don't expect anything nearly
as cute or as good. Marmaduke, (the cartoon strip), captured the
true essence of a Great Dane. The quirkiness, the emotions, the
loveability and the true humor of the breed. The creator
of Marmaduke had Great Danes and was able to capture in one little
cartoon, the true qualities of the breed. Not so with the people
involved in making the movie, or so it seemed. The movie had a mixture of=
animation and real, but left you unfulfilled and wanting more...

hmmm, maybe I can get a job as a movie reviewer...

The reason for today's column is to hopefully, send out a message that
= needs to be sent to anyone who sees Marmaduke and wants to get a Great =
Dane, or shared with anyone who may mention they want one after seeing
= the movie. Whenever a movie comes out featuring animals, dogs in general,=
and 101 Dalmations in particular, people rush out to get that breed and=
bring a puppy home. As was the case in 101 Dalmations, those adorable
spotted puppies grew up into a breed that can be high maintenance and
high energy. The shelters filled up with Dalmations months after and
everytime the movie is re-released by Disney. This is not only sad,
but burns me to no end because a dog is purchased on the whimsy of their=
owners or their kids without learning anything about the breed and knowin= g
what they're getting into...

That's why Im here today, to share "Things to know before getting your=
own Marmaduke" for those who may want to rush out and get one of these=
loveable goofs...

Sheer size...Great Dane puppies are only small out of the womb, a few
weeks later, they are already bigger than most breeds and aren't "small=
and cuddly" for very long. Think in terms of weeks, not months...

The average weight for a Dane is 150-200 pounds, average 6 to almost 7
= feet standing up on their back legs. As everyone has seen because of
"George" being plastered all over the Internet, they can be BIGGER. A=
six month old great Dane can knock you over and take you for a walk
before you know what hit you...

Two, 40 pound bags of dog food are their standard amount of food, (for =
one Dane)...

The breed is prone to health problems that often require expensive
surgeries, and the saddest part of this breed is their life expectancy
= isn't very long...

While all dogs can be destructive, not too many breeds can chew through=
sheet-rock, trees, and can eat and destroy a whole couch! There are qui= te
a few videos on YouTube showing the damage a few great Danes did to their=
homes and the owners filmed it...

Because of this, when they're young, you can't leave a Great Dane puppy =
loose in the house and go to work. They will get into too much trouble. =
But puppies are also unhappy if you crate them. New owners will find
themselves in quite a tizzy until a Dane is trained and able to be
left alone, although a bored great Dane is always a "dangerous" Great=
Dane, which is why...

Great Danes need constant companionship and a second dog is a better
than good idea if an adult is not at home with them. I can personally
= vouch for this one because Keno, God love him, was a pretty bad boy until=
he matured, but Moosie and Ginger, being sisters and raised together, too= k

bites out of each other and left the furniture alone. They amuse each oth= er
and play, play, play when they get bored...

Although the dogs are big, they aren't what you would call athletic. They=
can't jog, it will tear up their hips. When they run, it's hard and fast=
and a thing of beauty to watch, but it's usually for only a few minutes=
and then a 10 hour nap is needed...

Danes can be very susceptible to heat stroke. You shouldn't leave a Dane =

outside on a hot day for longer than it takes to go to the bathroom witho= ut

risk, although my goofballs will go out and lie in the SUN when it's abov= e
100 degrees, then come in panting like fools. I learned a long time ago,=
how to cool them off immediately and here's a trick for those who may als= o
have a bigger dog that needs cooling off quickly. Get a washcloth, (in =
my case, I use a towel), soak it in cool water, wring it out and apply =
it to their groin area. Repeat a few times because you will feel the
towel warm up as the heat from their bodies gets transferred. Don't give=
them ice water, they can get a tummy ache, cool water is good enough.
Moosie and Ginger LOVE when I do this and I sometimes wonder if they go=
outside to tempt heat stroke so that mommy will give them a cool treatmen= t.
YES, they are that smart and and can connive you into anything...

They are called "Gentle giants" and they are. They are extremely good=
with children and the only thing that can happen is that a dog of this
= size will knock kids and things over, not out of anger, more out of
playfulness...

While they have "jaws of death" and can crack a huge bone in half wit= h a
bite, they are one of the least agressive breeds on the planet and given=
their size, that's something. I have never seen Keno, Moosie or Ginger
= display any anger towards anyone...

People think you need a huge house or a huge back yard to have Danes. Not=
true. What you Do need is large furniture and a large bed!

I would definitely suggest getting to know a Great Dane and if possible,=
go to a breeder and see what you are getting into. While the above "gui= de"
may scare people away from getting one, make no mistake about one thing..= .

I wouldn't own another breed and to have a Great Dane is one of life's
= greatest joys and in our case, times two! Ask any Dane owner why they=
would get a breed that doesn't live that long and rips your heart out
when the end comes, and we will all tell you...

The love you give is never as much as the love you get and no matter what=
kind of day, week or month you may be having, you will never be around
= a Dane without smiling and then laughing within minutes of saying hello..= .

I hope this has helped either ease your mind about the breed or make you,=
or someone you know, think before jumping into it, because quite frankly,=
I can't go around the country adopting all of them, (as much as I would=
love to).

I will say that after seeing Marmaduke, those maternal instincts started=
raging and it's not because of the kids in the movie, I actually found
= myself wanting to go look at some puppies. I'll blame it on the 109 degre= e
heat, but boy would I love to...

Many of you have asked for the link to "Danes of Greatness", even tho= ugh
you have seen it before. Many of you may be newer to the column and have=
never seen my girls, Coco, aka "Moosie and Ginger in "action" in a = cute
video done by my son. To keep these things in perspective, they were just=
a little over a year old and still growing. Enjoy!
