April 9, 2010

Greetings...

Our back yard is undergoing a renovation today. The eight years,
sun, heat, and of course, four Great Danes through the years have
taken quite a toll on the landscaping. You can temporarily "fix"
things for so long before it all needs revamped...

10 tons of stone are piled high at the end of our driveway. Yes, that
may seem like a lot, but through the years, the depth of the stone has =

diminished to the point of bare ground showing in pretty much every spot =

that Moosie and ginger run and play and disperse stones up and out of the=

yard. The desert behind me has a nice decorative look to it with coral st=
one
scattered here and there...

All of the sprinkler hoses are being pulled up, replaced, and buried
deeper this time. The original goofballs that did the work barely covered=

the hoses, which is why we have been having nothing but trouble with the =

water system lately...

The biggest change will be the one that make the poochies mad. The
hill that is part of the pool waterfall has taken the biggest beating
from them. The lush, green vegetation that once was there is only a
memory. They love running up and over it and have taken every plant,
stone, and light with them as they fly through there. The new design
is to create a barrier of bushes and pygmy palms to divert them away from=

it. In principle, it sounds good, we'll have to wait and see on that one.=

Ginger likes to play "Mountain Goat" and walk down the front of the b=
oulders

right to the edge of the pool. I almost have a heart attack
every time I see her walking down, and although she never falls, I
still can't look and have to turn away...

The last phase of the renovation will be the lighting. This has me concer=
ned
because every light that was put in the back is no longer staked in the g=
round
and points upwards in every direction. If there are space aliens hovering=

around Arizona, it's because they are getting signals from our house. I a=
sked

Flyboy is we could look into runway lighting!

The new grass has done well and Moosie and Ginger love playing and sprawl=
ing
out on it. I'm lucky that they never pee or do their "business" in th=
e grass.
Guess it's too much to ask for them to train the freakin' Rabbits to use=

the stones...

The front yard will also be getting a little care, although it has no
Dane damage, it needs stone and I'm having more plants added. Because of=

the !@#$%^& Homeowners Association, there are strict guidelines=
as to
what can be planted in the front and even in the back. For those who
have been with me for years, you'll remember me having to have my
beautiful tall Palm trees pulled out because they could be seen from
the street. Give me a break!

This is why I'm going with Pygmy Palms this time. I love Palm trees and=

these will never grow taller than our fence...

I'll leave Homeowner's Associations alone...

For now...

Flyboy is leaving as the work begins and will come back to a new and
improved yard. Men are so "funny". Yesterday, we had to go and buy al=
l
the polants we want in the yard, minus the Palms, which the landscaper =

will bring. Because I was put "in charge" of picking the plants, bush=
es
and flowers I like and placing them where I want them planted, a certain=

amount of planning had to be done. I went out with a notebook and planned=

the details with a list of the "stuff" that was going to be planted..=
.

When I came back in the house, Flyboy was ready and waiting to go to
the nursery to pick out everything and bring them home. Seeing the list=

on paper and then going to get them are two different things. Two flatbed=

carts filled with a total of 35 plants and bushes caused him to finally=

ask...

"Where the heck are these all gonna go and how the heck are we gonna ge=
t
them home"? The short and simple answer...

"In the yard and in the SUV, twice if needed". I figured that would b=
e
motivation enough to make sure he placed everything in the car in an
orderly fashion so he wouldn't have to make two trips. It worked and
all I had to listen to on the way home was...

"I think you bought too much and I don't think there's room for all of=

this".

Sure, that was a lot of plants, but we have 3/4 of an acre of yard and =

he had to choke on his words when we unloaded them and I placed them all=

in the spots they were going to be planted, front and back. I actually =

think I could have used a few more!

I won't say that Flyboy is happy that he's going to be gone during all =

the "fun", but I think I saw him looking at his schedule a little mor=
e
often than usual...

But...He's pretty predictable and will come home, look at the finished =

project and say...

"It looks great, but...I think we may need a few more plants"...

:-)

Have a great weekend everyone!!!
