April 28, 2010

Greetings...

The painting is coming along and should be done today. I'm very happy
with the way it's turning out. This afternoon the air conditioning guy =

is coming, and aside from one last major house project, things should
quiet down for a few weeks...

A house is the biggest investment people will usually make during
their lifetime. Maintaining that house is a constant chore and expense,=

and there's a sense of pride in that ownership in most cases. Homeowner's=

Associations were orginally created for condos and townhouses to maintain=

common areas that the owners didn't have to take care of. A monthly
assessment was charged to cover the expenses of this maintenance...

I'm not sure when it happened, but somewhere along the way, housing
developments decided it would be a great idea to have their own
Homeowner's Associations to make sure the neighborhoods were kept
neat and "orderly". Rules were written up that covered multitudes of=

issues from landscaping to house colors with loads of "other" rules=

that border on ridiculous...

Monthly fees were assessed, just like condows and townhouses to cover
the expenses of common areas once taken care of the villages themselves..=
.

Unless you live in a rural area, it's becoming harder and harder to find=

an area that doesn't have these associations, and if you happen to live=

in a neighborhood that has one, I'm sure you have had to dealt with the=

insane group of people on the board, who are volunteers and also homeowne=
rs
in the neighborhood...

I have one letter in my "file" that goes back a few years for having =
palm
trees in my back yard that were visible from the street. How I managed to=

escape the death penalty for such a grievous offense is beyond me. When=

we moved in we had to suplly the landscape design and have it approved, =

which it was at the time because although Palm trees are not allowed in=

the front yard, we were told that you could do anything you wanted in
your back yard. We fought it when we were told to remove them and then =

told we would be fined $500 a DAY until they were removed!!! We r=
emoved
them and they waived the fines and it left a bad taste in my mouth as
far as the association and the board members who felt the need to have =

this issue become an issue in the first place...

Well, that one letter in my file became two this week...

I received a letter stating...

"Upon inspecting the neighborhood on a walk, it was noticed that your =

garbage receptacles were at the curb on Friday, even though garbage had =

been picked up on Wednesday. Please be advised rules are in force to help=

keep our neighborhood beautiful and expected to be followed. Please make =

sure this matter is taken care of immediately."

Yes, they were at the curb on Friday afternoon, but rather than explain=

why they were out there twice, I'll show you the note I sent to the board=

and management company as soon as i received the letter because I have to=

tell you, I saw RED!!!

My response...

"I just received your note about a report of our receptacles being outs=
ide by

the curb after garbage day. Besides being disgusted by the trivial matter=
that

caused the letter, I resent the fact that no one bothered to investigate =
WHY

the garbage cans were there...

A representative from the Village of ---- came to our door and asked us t=
o

apply two stickers on the cans. They were being replaced within the area.=

Since we aren't the only ones who were getting our cans replaced, there w=
ere

cans with the brightly colored stickers intermittently placed at the curb=

in the area. I would suggest the Nazis in charge of our association get t=
he

facts before reporting homeowners for such a stupid "offense", and be=
more

concerned with the issues that affect our neighborhood, such as overgrown=

vegetation around mailboxes, vandalism and solicitors in a gated communit=
y...

The cans were put at the curb on Friday as we were instructed for a sched=
uled

Saturday morning pick-up. They were put away as soon as the Village repla=
ced

them, so I will now assume that no one will call my mommy or daddy and ha=
ve me

grounded...

I spend hundreds of dollars a month to landscapers to maintain my yard, s=
o

"crapping up" the neighborhood isn't something I do...

I'm sorry for the tone of this letter, and I understand certain rules hav=
e to

be enforced, but to this one I just have to say...

Oh come on!!!"

I recieved a response to my response today...

"Dear Mrs.----, please accept our apology for the previous letter that =
was,
in fact, sent in error without getting the relevant information. The orig=
inal
letter has been removed from your file. From a personal standpoint, I hav=
e
to say I thoroughly enjoyed your note, and not to worry, your mother and =

father will not be called and you will not be grounded."

Is this crazy or what? I'm not arguing the fact that a person wants their=

neighborhood to keep some sort of "order" without overgrown weeds in=

neighbor's yards or cars on blocks in the front yard, but this? How do =

they know I didn't have a stroke on the way to going out to put the
garbage cans away? How do they know that there wasan't a band of juvenile=

delinquents running around grabbing garbage cans and placing them at the=

curb, just to destroy the pristine look of a...STREET???

Sheeesh, I know many of you have Homeowner's associations, which also mea=
ns
you have plenty of horror stories to share...

The blogs are waiting for youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu...
