July 12, 2010

Greetings...

For the past week, the Midwest and East have suffered through some
very hot temperatures. What makes it worse is the high humidity that
accompanied the high temps. Although in Arizona, we're in the middle
of the "Dog days of Summer" with temps hovering between 111-113 degre= es,
humidity levels around 5% DO make a difference in why we can not only
live here, but go outside without passing out!

When Flypup was here last week, he jogged every evening when the temps
= were still around 103. When he got back to Baltimore, the temps were
100 degrees and 90+% humidity which made him call and tell me he wanted=
to come back to Arizona to get away from the heat! =

When the temps are this hot, Moosie and Ginger limit their time outdoors=
and only go out when they have to, or have a reason to like they did
yesterday afternoon...

After a very long period of not seeing one Rabbit in the yard, I noticed=
the shaded area of our grass literally covered in Rabbits the past week,=
every afternoon around the same time. They were grazing, lazilly stretchi= ng

out, and even napping, not caring that there were two sleeping giants ins= ide!

Yesterday, that all changed...

I went out on the patio to clean out the dog's water bowls and put fresh=
ice in them and saw the lawn covered again, in Rabbits. Big ones, small o= nes,
you name it, they were in the grass. They didn't move when I went out the= re
even though they saw me and continued doing what they were or weren't doi= ng...

I went back in to get the pitcher of ice I had on the counter and left th= e
patio door open long enough to have two sleepy-eyed dogs follow me out. =
That's when all the "fun" began and I gotta admit, I watched the whol= e thing
laughing as it all took place!

Moosie came out first, yawning and glanced in the direction of "Rabbitv= ille"
and seemed to take a second look. Ginger followed with a yawn, but given=
the fact that she is the watchdog and what I call the "Barney Fife" o= f Danes,
got into "Hunter" mode and took off towards the Rabbits, Moosie follo= wed
but you could tell she had no clue why she was running until...

Rabbits started going EVERYWHERE! To the left, to the right, behind bus= hes,
on the patio, past my feet, up and over the fence, around the trees,
around the pool, and all while the two Keystone Cops gave chase!

One Rabbit, that I had my eye on decided it wasn't worth the risk and
flattened itself completely next to the pool on the stones and remained=
there motionless while this was all going on. It never moved and although=
it was in full view and I was watching it, Frick and Frack never saw it= !

Ginger and Moosie finally got overheated and lost track of every Rabbit.=
They came over to drink the nice, fresh, cold water as the Rabbit watched=
them and I watched the Rabbit. I sent the dogs back in because I felt
sorry for the poor thing who was probably hotter than heck lying in the=
stones and also probably needed a heart monitor. As soon as I was sure
= the girls were in the house and out of Rabbit view, I scampered the poor =
thing out of the yard...

You would think those Rabbits would decide this yard may be a little too=
dangerous to hang around in, but they must realize that although Keno
could give chase and catch one here and there, the chances of these two=
goofs getting anything other than heat stroke is slim to none. That's
probably why this has been a regular occurence the past week. I almost
= wonder if they are waiting for one of the times the sprinklers go on in=
the grass because they show up about 30 minutes before they turn on...
=
I guess they like to have some water to wash down the grass... =
