Phew...Boy am I tired! Flyboy and I went back and forth between Tucson=

and Phoenix for our son's graduation Friday and Saturday, and even though=

it was exhausting, it was well-worth it! The two-day event was filled w=

pride, memories and hope that the young generation receiving their diplom=

will become successful adults and more importantly, succesful human being=

The Keynote speaker was a man I truly admire, Bob Woodruff of ABC News.=

If you're not familiar with him, he was severely injured in Iraq a
few years ago, one month after being named the anchor of World News
Tonight...

He wasn't expected to survive his injures and suffered major brain
trauma. To try to make a long story short, he had to relearn everything=

including the ability to speak. His speech was humorous, moving and
inspirational and I truly wonder if the graduates really listened to
what he had to say in between their joyous outbursts...

Isn't it amazing that kids graduate thinking they know it all and don't=

realize their lack of knowledge until some key opportunities to learn
pass them by...

Every generation is no doubt, guilty of this!

Education, or the lack of it is the topic of today's column. A particular=

story that has been in the news not only caught my eye, but gave cause =

to some thinking that again, may tick some people off with my opinion
of this particular case...

The story...

An incident, labeled, "the teacher beating", caught on tape by a cell=

phone shows an incident where a teacher beats a student. In the video, =

the teacher beating shows a young adolescent being backed into a corner, =

then hit, slapped and kicked by an adult woman. The teacher is allegedly =

Sherri Davis, a science teacher at a Houston charter school. The entire =

teacher beating caught on tape started, apparently, because the 13-year =

old boy had teased another student. While students in the classroom admit=

that Isaiah Johnson was misbehaving, there is absolutely NO justification=

in this teacher's behavior. I don't care if she "snapped", if she was=

under stress, or if students are so bad today that teachers have "bad=

days"...

Some students in the classroom at the time of the beating have told

investigators that there were other teachers and school employees in
the room, and they did not step in...

Both the school and the Harris County Sheriff?s Department are looking =

into the allegations. It is possible that Sherri Davis will be charged =

with assault, among other things, for her treatment of Isaiah Johnson. =

The fine for assault, in Texas, can be as much as $10,000...

The teacher, as well as the student are Black and why do I mention this?=


Ordinarily, I might not, but watching the tape online of the beating,
something kept going on in my mind over and over and over...

Had Ms. Davis been White, I can guarantee she would have been arrested =

and charged with assault among other things and had to post bail to
get out. I'm not saying Ms. davis won't be charged, or she won't pay
for her violent behavior, however...

The outrage that would have been shown by the media, the community, and=

of course, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson et. al would have been loud enough=

to hear across the country...

Is a violent crime more "worthy" in their eyes if a White person is=

perpetrating it against a Black person, or is there more money available=

for law suits???

I don't care WHAT color this teacher is, I hope they throw the book
at her. What she did was not only wrong, but an insult to teachers
all over the country. The state of education in this country is
slowly going down the tubes. Hiring teachers such as this one is
a strong argument for doing a clean sweep of the system and not
only test the teachers in charge of our children's education, but
stop using race to fill quotas and go back to hiring people who
are the best qualified for the position and PAY them accordingly
to their achievements and accomplishments as a teacher!

Stop giving out awards to ALL the students to protect their "sensitivit=
es"
and give them something to WORK for! Keep unions in place to protect wo=
rker's
rights and safety, but stop allowing them to legally prevent "dead-beat=
s"
from not living up to the job they are being paid to do...

In most jobs, people are expected to do a good job and if they don't, the=
y
are let go and replaced for the good of the company. Do our children
deserve less than a decent education? They deserve a good education and=

they NEED a structured one. One with rules, one with discipline and one=

that makes a parent become involved. Parents have helped to create the =

downward spiral in their own children's education because they can't cont=
rol
their own kids at home and wonder why their kids are animals at school...=


They want the teachers to do THEIR job and are quick to jump on the teach=
er
if their "precious angel" got their feelings hurt...

The Dean at the University of Arizona gave a sad and startling fact at =

the graduation ceremony and one that made me sit straight up in my seat..=
.

Arizona ranks LAST in the amount of high school seniors that go on to
college with a rate of 45%...

I could go on and on about the reasons for this and if you think illegal=

immigration doesn't have something to do with this, then again, someone=

isn't giving the rest of the country the facts. Between the extremely
high drop-out rate among Hispanics and the "dumming down" of the clas=
ses
to accomodate non-English speaking students, I'm not surprised at the
facts, even though it angers me...

My kids are all out of high school and the last one is two years away
from graduating college. This statistic has no impact on my kids, but
to those with young kids going to school in Arizona, it should be another=

reason to pay attention to what is going on here...

OK, I think I've said enough to get black teachers, white teachers,
parents, and of course, illegal immigrants mad at me today...
