February 17, 2010

Greetings...

I know quite a few of you have written and asked me what I thought
about a recent news story concerning an overweight Hollywood actor/
Director and Southwest Airlines, since Flyboy is a pilot for them...

I will give you my opinion and not based on someone who greatly
benefits from this particular airline, but as "me"...

For those who may not live in the U.S. or may not be aware of the
story causing all the hooplah, I'll give you a short synopsis of
the incident...

Kevin Smith, a Hollywood actor/Director purchased two tickets for
a flight From Oakland to Burbank. The flight was this past Saturday.
Smith purchased two tickets to begin with because he happens to
be overweight and airline policy states that an extra seat must be
purchased if the size of the passenger restricts their ability to
be safely seat belted and seated with the arm rests in place...

Keep in mind, even though they may be able to fit into the seat,
"infringing" on the seat next to theirs is also an issue considered=

to be fair to those seated on either side or next to them...

While this policy has come to light many times with Southwest Airlines, =

call any airline and you will se they have the same policy...

Considering Smith not only has flown Southwest before, he purchased
two tickets, not only because of policy, but for his own comfort...

Because of Southwest's liberal policy regarding changing plans, Smith
asked to go on an earlier flight and was told he could go. Unfortunately,=

you have to go stand-by if you want to make last minute changes. The
other unfortunate thing for Smith is that there was only one seat left =

and for whatever reason, he boarded the flight and sat down, belted
up and waited for the plane to take-off. He was approached by a flight =

attendant and asked to get off the plane. Did the pilot remove
him as Nixon claimed? Pilot's are pretty busy before flights take-off =

and when a stand-by passenger gets on, it's usually at the last minute,=

and rather hurried. While the Captain is always in charge of his plane =

and what goes on, in this case, it's usually the Customer Service Rep
that initiates the action at the urging of a flight attendant who may
have had a reason for the action. In this case, it may have been a
complaint from the passenger on both sides of him since he got the
middle seat...

He did board his regularly scheduled flight and Twittered some nasty
messages regarding his experience and I can't say I blame him, I probably=

would have too!

I think a passenger has the right to complain when seated next to
someone with a screaming, obnoxious kid, but that's a whole topic
in itself...

Is this policy discrimination, a way to make a few extra bucks although=

Southwest is the only airline that doesn't charge for checked baggage? =

I doubt this is a reason. Is it a safety issue? Seat belt extenders
are on every flight, the sad truth is if an extender is needed, chances=

are one seat may not be big enough. Airline seats barely seat anyone
over 13 as it is! If I had to speculate, I would say the reason could=

be the comfort of the passenger and those seated next to them. The
second ticket is discounted and again, Nixon has traveled enough to
know the "ropes". Does this make Southwest Airlines right? Not
necessarily and if they had "done their homework" and realized there=

was only one seat on the plane and this passenger had purchased an
additional seat, they wouldn't have embarrassed not only Nixon, but
themselves by letting him leave earlier than his scheduled flight...

Should Southwest give away a seat? If you have ever traveled on this
particular airline, you already know they are busy with almost every
flight booked to capacity. Airlines charge for toddlers even though
they may spend most of the flight on their mother's laps...

Southwest also has one set of seats. No first class, no business class,=

and passengers needing extra room have the option on other airlines
to pay quite a bit extra to be seated in roomier seats...

Am I defending Southwest Airlines? I guess to a degree I am because I
know a little more about what goes on "behind the scenes" and some =

of the abuse the employees take on a daily basis. Passengers with
extremely poor hygiene and quite "odiferous" have been removed when=

it became obvious there were going to be quite a few complaints, (or
were already coming in), and the flight would be unbearable for the
whole plane load of customers. This isn't an easy job for the people
who have to deal with this more than you even realize. I can't tell
you how many times Flyboy has had to radio ahead at the arrival city
to have local police meet the plane and remove a drunk or unruly
passenger. If the passenger is obvioulsy drunk during boarding, they
will not be allowed to board and can't until they sober up, even if
it takes 24 hours...

I realize it's easy to claim discrimination in today's world and no
one will argue that everyone has rights, but sometimes circumstances
have to dictate policy or safety and while I think the 100.00 voucher
Southwest gave Nixon along with their apologies was pretty much a joke,=

I still say not too many people ever heard of him before this incident =

and the free publicity he seems to have gotten because of this might
seem a little "suspect" to someone who is a little cynical. Don't
forget, he had purchased two seats before and was no stranger to
flying on Southwest...

I'm just saying...

Like it or not, this is the state of air travel today. You're traveling=

500 miles per hour in a metal bullet and passengers deserve rights
and thanks for keeping the airlines in business, but there has to be
some control and rules to protect us all. A lesson we are aware of
everytime we have to go through security...
