Greetings...

Recently, a court order believed to be the first of its kind
was enforced in England when a veterinarian had Gucci, a Bull Terrier,
= removed from its owners because the dog was obese and in the vet's
and court's opinion, suffering...

The 9-year-old Gucci was so heavy, that she could barely walk down the =
street and had sore paws from trying to support her weight. According
to the animal welfare officer, Gucci was suffering through lack of care =
and exercise...

Gucci was taken from the owners and sent to a canine fat farm, where
she has been put on a strict diet and exercise program to lose 30
pounds and get her down to a target weight of 44 pounds...

Under England's 2006 Animal Welfare Act, an animal can be removed
from its owner if it is in danger and the vet felt this dog was in
danger because the owners repeatedly refused to follow his orders
to put the dog on a diet and explained over and over that the dog
would die if something wasn't done. The owners were warned four times
= and When the dog continued to gain weight and not lose weight, the vet =
took action...

I don't know if Gucci will be returned to her owners when and if she
is successful in her weight loss program. I hope a follow-up on
this story lets us know...

Many of you will remember a similar situation with my Mystic, who I
rescued from a Great Dane shelter many years ago. She was removed from
= the owners on the spot from the vet when he saw the condition my poor
= little girl was in when she was taken in to the vet for treatment. It
wasn't a case of obesity since Mystic was an emaciated 70 pounds, but
the badly battered body she had from violent abuse...

I know everyone would agree with the vet's decsion in this case and
would applaud his actions. I know I did considering I had the honor
of having Mystic in my home and loving her and being loved by her
until she died...

When it comes to an obese dog, what are your thoughts? The dog is in
danger and likely to die sooner than it should because of obesity, but
= I wonder if the same could be said for the parents of the grossly
overweight kids that seem to be the norm these days. People are quick
to put the blame on fast food joints and companies that make snacks,
but my generation grew up with loads of snacks and fast food places
that used ingredients that were MUCH unhealthier as far as sugar,
salt, and fat. You may have seen a chubby kid on occassion, but rarely
= would you see obese kids like you do today. Suing McDonald's or any
company because your kid got fat is a joke. How about getting them outsid= e
and making them move around a bit?

That being said, aren't the parents responsible and would you be as quick=
to applaud a doctor who took legal action against the parents of an obese=
child? Would you consider this child abuse?

I'm not comparing dogs to humans, but actions taken to stop a lack of,
= or dangerous care. One action surely agreed with, but when it comes
to the same principle regarding a child, a much "stickier" situation = I
think you would agree...

There is a video going around the Internet and the news stations of a
two-year-old Indonesian baby smoking cigarettes like a champ. He smokes=
two packs a day and his parents claim he throws tantrums if he doesn't
= get his smokes. He is also very overweight. I watched the video and
in all honesty, at first...let out a giggle, but then I was So repulsed=
at it and probably called his parents every name in the book. Upon
reading more about this kid, I learned that most kids in Indonesia
start smoking at five or six!!!

If any of us saw this going on anywhere near us, whether it be in a park,=
or even the kid's home, we would probably report them for child abuse
and I bet the kid would be removed from their home and the parents
brought up on charges of endangerment and no one would bat an eye at
reporting them or having severe action taken against the parents...

But...when it comes to obesity, it's a different ballgame and my
question to you today is...

Is obesity a valid reason for a dog or a child to be removed from a
home to make an owner or parent responsible for changing their own
behavior to preserve the health of their animal or their child?

I think I can speak for many when I say most of us have had a pet that
= could have weighed less and were given treats and table food a little
too often. I will also say that most of us may have had a "chubby"
= period or had kids that had a "chubby" period that wasn't permanent..= .

I'm not talking about that, I'm talking about the instances where a
parent shoves food in a kid's mouth to quiet them down and starts
a pattern that leads to an unhealthy lifestyle that can affect the
health of that child...

So, do you think I'm "barking" up a wrong tree?
