Like The Snuggie...BUT 1/2 The Price...

March 1, 2010
Greetings...
I'd like to thank everyone for the emails and comments on the blog
regarding last week's tragedy at Sea World. Many shared their opinions
=
and observations, and whether or not you agree with what I said about
the incident, I always enjoy reading the different perspectives when
it's different than mine. Sure, I may argue it on the blogs, but the
beautiful thing about it is we CAN voice our opinions...
My job isn't to be the most popular editor on the planet, my job is
to engage you in thought. Sometimes you will agree, sometimes you
will disagree and sometimes, more than not, I take risks by saying
things most wish they could, but can't or won't because of the
backlash it may cause. I admit, that's the part of this job that
I enjoy the most...
Pushing the envelope. Today is no different than any other day...

I'm writing this on Saturday. I woke up early and flipped on the TV
to hear the news of an earthquake in Chile with a magnitude of 8.8-
9.0 depending on different reports coming out on the news. The one
thing that is definite is that it is one of the strongest earthquakes
ever recorded. The death toll won't be accurate for a while and the
concern now is the tsunami that is threatening Hawaii and coastlines
along the Pacific Ocean. By the time you read this, all of the info
will be at your disposal. As with the recent earthquake in Haiti, loss
=
of life is always hard to see, and your hearts go out to the victims
and their families. Countries and their citizens open their hearts and
=
wallets to help when these thing happen all over the world. The U.S.
is usually one of the first to help and our citizens always rise to
the occasion through donations, telethons, and pleas for help...
OK, here it comes...
Where was a helping hand when Hurricane Katrina hit a few years ago,
leaving death and devastation in its path, some of which is still in
need of help? Our own government, which is "Johnny of the spot" when=
it comes to charity for other countries, not only ignored the cries
of our citizens, but were slow, and have been slow in aiding the places =
hit so hard. Things still aren't back to normal in Louisiana and
Mississippi, two places hit the hardest from Katrina...
Our citizens did what they could to raise money to help, and they are
still volunteering, but shouldn't our governent not only be ashamed
of themselves for their handling of our own catastrophe, but live by the=
old adage of, "charity begins at home"? Shouldn't they be embarrassed=
that in America, land of the "rich", (HA!) children go to sleep eve=
ry
night hungry, people live on the streets, people are in danger of
losing their homes, or have lost their homes at alarming rates? Does
the rest of the world know how much trouble America is in financially
and yet, we have billions to give to OTHER countries? This has always
been a sore spot for me and before you think I'm a heartless witch,
take a step away from the send button and understand what I'm talking
about...
I'm not saying that we shouldn't help those in need and I have always
tried to donate as much as I can when tragedies have occurred in
other countries, but my first priority has always been the people
that need it here, because make no mistake, the numbers are higher
than we could imagine, or would like to know. Heck, I even donated
money after Katrina when I saw that animals were in need. I couldn't
stand to see the faces of those poor animals...

I resent my tax dollars going outside the country, or to support
deadbeats or illegal aliens. Look at it this way. If you are someone
who is struggling right now, just trying to put food on the table
and someone asks you to donate money to the poor people of whatever
country happens to need it that week and someone will ALWAYS need
our help, are you going to feed your children or send your money
outside of the country? If you can feed your family and have a little
left over and can and want to help those in need, as humans, we should
=
be benevolent and generous to those less fortunate...
However...
Shouldn't our own government think the same way? Start helping those
who are homeless, hungry and in jeopardy of losing everything because
of our tanking economy, and when you are done, if you have any money
left over, feel free to help others outside of our country...
What do you think it would take to help in need in the U.S.? How many
countries would help us? Some, but very few...
OK, I'm done with my rant, you don't have to agree with me and are free=
to offer your own arguments as to why I'm wrong, but this is how I feel=
and a person can't really help how they feel...
