Greetings...

I'm back in Arizona and as "luck" would have it, just in time to
have the 100+ temperatures arrive this week. It was warm in Chicago
while I was there and the humidity reminded my hair that it was
naturally curly...

It was nice visiting with friends and a few, (very few) relatives,
with one of the highlights being my visit with my son...

The absolute highlight was the eight days I got to spend with my mom.
I wish I could say she was doing fantastic, but that would be a lie
and I guess "OK" is the best I can say at this time. What is better=

than "OK" is her memory and ability to spend hours on end talking to=

me about any and everything that comes up in conversation. Thankfully, =

her mind hasn't diminished and she is still the intelligent woman she
has always been. I still learn from her and amazingly can smile at
little "lectures" she hands out without getting my knickers in a knot=

like I would have years ago...

I feel it's extremely important to allow older people feel that they
still have important things to share and say, because they do and the
younger generations would benefit greatly by sitting down with an
older person and just listening to them, their stories, (even if you've=

heard them 1,000 times before), and the history of the family, the
generation, and the world...

I never like saying good-bye to my mom. It's a painful experience for
me and this time was no better. The last hug we shared before I left
for the airport was a little longer than usual and neither one seemed
to want to let go. Flypup took me to the airport and as is the usual
"habit", I feel a deep sadness when I get on the plane. I stare out t=
he
window as the plane takes off and say good-by to my hometown and see
my mom's face as I stare out the window...

It's not until we start our descent into Phoenix that I re-focus and
feel happy about getting back to my hubby, poochies, and home. I have
to give my purse and anything else I may be carrying to Flyboy because =

we both know what is going to happen as soon as I walk through the door..=
.

The Great Dane "welcome home" greeting. I become a mama sandwich with=

each one vying for "space and face". Any makeup I had on was licked o=
ff
within a minute. Both barged in on me when I went into the bathroom and=

they haven't left my side since I got home. They'll realize I'm here to=

stay in a day or so and go back to giving me some space...

It takes Flyboy a little longer to realize this and back off!!!

The house was about as you would expect and the list has already been
started. The youngest one will be here another week before he heads
back to Tucson and Flyboy goes back to work at the end of the week.
I'll get more done when they are both gone and have plenty of time since=

the "dog days of Summer" are upon us and being inside is a way of lif=
e
for the next few months...

I have to admit, I'm tired. Not from over-doing or anything like that, =

I think it's more emotional...

I'll close today's column with an additonal little piece of "advice" =
if
you will. While I said that older people should be talked to and listened=

to, I would suggest younger parents take the time to talk to their kids=

and give them the history of their family and even their own childhood...=


Things have evolved so much that you don't need to be 80 years old to
have things that are so different from today's generation. Even a decade=

or two can show surprising changes. My generation was lucky enough to
have our moms around enough to share many things, the younger generation=

may have more than we did, but they are missing out on something very
valuable and that is time with their parents. Time that doesn't involve=

computers, cell phones and anything else that prevents the face to face=

interaction that is so lacking in the younger generation. They're smarter=

than us in so many ways if you look at the technology they have mastered,=

but in all honesty, they are so dumb when it comes to some things that =

matter...
