October 8, 2010

Greetings...

Singapore Airlines made news this week when it announced a
multi-million-dollar collaboration with in-flight connectivity
provider OnAir to offer Wi-Fi Internet access and other services
on its flights. That piece of news isn't really the "big news"
from the airline...

The news that has everyone talking about is that they will soon
allow wireless connections for text messages, Blackberrys and
cellphones. The airlines is waiting for customer response to see
if cell phones will be included in the wireless service. This is
scheduled to go into effect early next year...

Normally, I wouldn't be concerned with an airline that there's a
good chance I will never have the opportunity to fly on, but the
fact that there has to be a first for there to be a second, third, etc.
has me concerned...

Being able to use the Internet on a flight would be great and help
pass the time on long flights. Texting, if that's your thing. could
also help if you're the type that doesn't want to read, snooze, or
just relax during your flight...

Howeverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....

Do you really want to sit next to someone who will be blabbing the
whole flight and having to listen to a conversation that is not only
not your business, but probably louder than normal due to the cabin
and airplane noise???

If you think a crying baby is bad, think about dozens of people's
phones ringing, and conversations that end up being noise the further
you are from the caller or recipient of the call...

I realize people feel the need to be "connected" 24/7 these days, but
tell me why there is a need to allow phone calls on a flight? If you
think it's a good idea in case a person has an emergency and needs to
be notified, I think you would agree that at 30,000 feet, no matter
what the emergency is, there's not a heck of a lot one can do until
they land...

I disagree with allowing phone calls during flight because of an almost
extinct behavior in today's society...

Common courtesy to others...

:-)

Have a great weekend everyone!
