November 16, 2009

Greetings...

Flyboy is in Dallas until Wednesday night for his six-month Captain
testing. You've heard me talk about the trials and tribulations of
being a pilot and the sacrifices that go with it. With Flyboy being
in the middle of his career and Flypup in the infancy in his career,
watching what both have to do to be a commercial airline pilot makes
we wonder why some pilots would not only risk their careers, their
lives, and the lives of their passengers by doing something STUPID...

What am I talking about?

I'm talking about a few recent news stories about a few pilots. I'm
sure you heard about the two Northwest Airline pilots who were unresponsi=
ve
to radio calls and missed their approach city and continued on for a litt=
le
over an hour. Although there were a few "bogus" reasons given as to t=
he
reason for this, I don't think there's any doubt that the two of them =

were sound asleep. They weren't cat napping, they were "dead to the wor=
ld
sound asleep" because they didn't hear the radio calls in their ears an=
d
I have personally heard some of the alarm bells that sound when there is=

an issue, and they are not quiet!

The next case is a little more recent. An airline pilot was removed off=

his flight when he was found to be intoxicated or at least, hampered by=

alcohol a week or so ago...

In both cases, different circumstances, yet I still have the intense need=

to say...

WHAT THE HELL???

In both of these cases, their careers are over, although the sleeping
pilots may be able to get back into the cockpit after a year and blame =

fatigue as the cause, a very big problem for pilots. Airlines don't
really care about their pilots, only their profit margins in all honesty.=
..

However, in the case of a pilot that risks it all because of booze, I hav=
e
absolutely NO sympathy for him and believe he or she is actually worse th=
an
the person who gets behind the wheel of a car drunk. Understand I make =

no excuses for that, but the potential for disaster is multiplied because=

of the sheer amount of the would-be victims, in the air and possibly on t=
he
ground. No car accident caused by a drunk driver has that potential. The=

only thing I believe that should be the same whether it be a pilot or a=

drunk driver is punishment to the full extent of the law and then some!=

It just boggles my mind that given the amount of time it takes to become=

a pilot, the hard work, the sacrifices they and their families make,
and the personal risk they put themselves through every day because of =

their job, they would risk it all in the blink of an eye, or in this case=
,
the "tip of the elbow"...

Unfortunately, these aren't isolated cases and although I don't want
to scare everyone and especially the already "white-knuckled fliers",=

I asked Flyboy if this is rare or if it happens more than any of us
are aware of, (meaning pilots drink before going to work) and he
somberly said, "It happens more than anyone wants to realize"...

Sad, but true...

The pilot rule regarding drinking is... "Eight hours, bottle to throttl=
e"...

Too bad some pilots are willing to risk it all and endanger all of us by=

following...

"I need a drink, I don't think."
