Running in the summer is great. Less layers to get in the way while you run, your skin gets to breathe when the wind hits it. Running in the fall has its advantages too. Here are some tips on how to adjust your running routines to get ready for the fall!

When you run in the summer your heart has to work harder to keep your body temperature down so it's harder to run farther and longer as some people would like, even with proper running and weather attire. In the fall, your body isn't working to lower your body temperature as hard, so you'll find the effort to run and the distance you run can be longer than in the summer. If possible, now would be a good time to extend your runs to go longer distances or to go faster. To be safe though, make sure not to increase your miles per week by more than 10%!

In the summer it's hard to run on some trails. They're filled with bugs, there's not as much of a breeze to keep you cool as running on open, boring spaces. In the fall, take advantage of the trails! As you run, take in the sites of the leaves or the animals building their nests or even just beautiful scenery of a country run. This will help make time go by quicker as you're running!

Remember that Daylight Savings is coming our way! Make sure you're either planning for an earlier run than before, or an early morning run if you want to go in the daylight. If you're going to run at night, remember it's going to be darker so always make sure to wear reflective clothing and bring a safety light!

Just because the weather is getting colder, that doesn't mean that you're skin isn't still at risk! Make sure to put on sunscreen before any run, cloudy weather or not, and make sure it's able to fight against UVA and UVB rays.

No matter what weather you're running in the general rule is to make sure to dress for weather 10 degrees warmer than the temperature is outside. In the fall that may mean you're chilly in the beginning of your run but once your heart rate is up, your body temperature will rise as well. Run in layers that can be easily taken off if necessary!

Whether you're running in spring, summer, fall, or winter make sure to have drink enough fluids before, during and after your run! Colder weather tends to fool people into thinking that hydration isn't as important, but it is! You may not be sweating as much as the warmer seasons but the fluids in your body still need to be replenished.

Hopefully these will help prepare you for the change in weather while running!
