CBS '60 Minutes' newsman Morley Safer dies at 84
Morley Safer, the longest-serving correspondent on the CBS newsmagazine 60 Minutes, died Thursday at age 84.

Safer, a native of Canada, joined CBS in 1964 after writing for Canadian newspapers and working as a correspondent for the Canadian Broadcasting Company. He started with 60 Minutes in 1970, two years after the television newsmagazine launched. His last story, his 919th, aired in March and was a profile of Danish architect Bjarke Ingels.

He retired from 60 Minutes just days ago. Sunday when the network aired a special, "Morley Safer: A Reporter's Life."

"It's been a wonderful run, but the time has come to say goodbye to all of my friends at CBS and the dozens of people who kept me on the air," Safer said at his retirement. "But most of all I thank the millions of people who have been loyal to our broadcast."

His cause of death wasn't revealed.

Safer was a legend in television news, with the likes of Mike Wallace, Harry Reasoner and Ed Bradley. He began his career with CBS working from the London bureau. In 1965, he opened the CBS News Saigon Bureau. That same year, his reporting drew criticism from U.S. President Lyndon Johnson after he showed a U.S. Marine in Vietnam setting a hut on fire with a cigarette lighter. Johnson, irate over the negative publicity, unsuccessfully lobbied CBS to censor Safer.

Out of the newsroom, Safer was a fan of fast cars and card games, purchasing a Bentley with poker winnings.

Among his many awards were 12 Emmys, three Overseas Press Club Awards, three Peabody Awards and two Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards.

Soap legend Deidre Hall gets star on Hollywood Walk of Fame
Long-time soap opera star Deidre Hall marked her 40th anniversary on the show Days of Our Lives by getting her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Thursday.

Hall received the 2,581st star on the walk, with fellow Days stars Susan Seaforth Hayes and Josh Taylor to help celebrate.

Hall, who got her start in TV in the late 1960s, first appeared on the long-running soap in June, 1976 and except for a few years off here and there, she's played psychiatrist Dr. Marlena Evans ever since.

With plot lines that included her character being kidnapped, in a coma, battling an evil twin, and even being possessed by the devil, Hall has played her character in just about any predicament.

"She's easy to play for me because I know her so well," she told Variety. "She is completely accepting, which is a comfortable place to be: to love everybody all the time."

And despite having to learn sometimes 30 pages of dialogue in a day, she still loves the job.

"It's the hardest job there is because of the pace," she said. "But those of us who work at this pace think, 'If I did film, I'd shoot myself! I can't read that many magazines.' We thrive on it."

Hall has also written three books, a children's book titled Little Big Bear; a humorous cookbook Deidre Hall's Kitchen Close-Up; and How Does She Do It? A Beauty Book, a self-deprecating look at the life of an actress.

Sara Ramirez exits 'Grey's Anatomy' after 10 years: 'I'm taking some welcome time off'
Sara Ramirez has taken to social media to announce her departure from ABC's hit medical drama Grey's Anatomy.

"I'm deeply grateful to have spent the last 10 years with my family at Grey's Anatomy and ABC, but for now I'm taking some welcome time off," the actress who portrays Dr. Callie Torres on the series wrote in a statement posted to Twitter Thursday.

"Shonda's been so incredible to work for, and we will definitely continue our conversations! I send my love to Ellen, the rest of the cast and crew, and I look forward to always being a part of the Shondaland family!" she continued referencing creator Shonda Rhimes and lead actress Ellen Pompeo.

Rhimes also released a statement on Twitter noting, "Dr. Callie Torres came into our lives dancing it out in her underwear almost a decade ago, and I could not be happier or more proud of her journey."

"Sara Ramirez's performance inspired me as well as millions of fans each week. We wish her the best on her well-deserved time off. I will miss Callie tremendously, but am excited for what the future holds for Sara. She will always have a home at Shondaland."

During Thursday's finale of Grey's Anatomy, Ramirez's character Dr. Callie had reached a custody agreement with her ex-wife Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) in order to allow her to visit their daughter Sofia.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Ramirez's exit comes as the rest of the principal cast, Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, Justin Chambers, James Pickens Jr., and Kevin McKidd are renegotiating their contracts.

Grey's Anatomy will return this fall on ABC.

'Sherlock Holmes 3': Producer Joel Silver says filming 'could happen this fall'
Development on Sherlock Holmes 3 continues, with producer Joel Silver saying that filming could begin in a few months.

"It looks like it could happen this fall. Downey said he wants to do it. He's gotta launch into another Avengers movie, right after the New Year, so we're trying to get it done," Silver said of franchise lead Robert Downey Jr.'s interest in getting the film made while speaking to Collider at a press event for The Nice Guys.

"We have a script that we like. Jude [Law] is available and Downey is available, and we're hoping we can get it done. If it works, great. If not, we'll do it another time. But, it looks like it could happen now," he continued.

Law played Sherlock's detective partner, Dr. Watson, alongside Downey in 2009's Sherlock Holmes and its 2011 sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, both directed by Guy Ritchie. A third film has been in development ever since.

When asked how long it's taken to finish the trilogy, and whether the third film would be the last, Silver responded: "I hope [it's not the last one]. I don't think so. How many Bond films have they made? As long as there's a character, we can work with it. It's not an end story. We can keep going, as long as people want to do it. It's [the actor's] call. They have to say, 'Okay, I'm ready to go.' I read about them making another Bad Boys. If they want to do it, then you try to get it done."

Downey has remained busy as Marvel superhero Iron Man/Tony Stark leading to delays; however, the actor recently said that he is still eager to return to the role. "If we could shoot it on Skype, we could have the whole [movie] done in a week. When we're making those Sherlock movies it is off the hook. [So] we'll attempt to make one this year. It really is a big deal to go and do those movies. I'm tired all the time, but I'm so excited about it," he said to ShortList at a press event for Captain America: Civil War.

Downey is scheduled to next appear in Avengers: Infinity War and then Spider-Man: Homecoming for Marvel.

Which comedian won $50,000 for charity on 'Jeopardy!'?

Louis C.K. was crowned a Jeopardy! champion Wednesday earning $50,000 for a charity of his choosing.

The comedian bested CNN anchor Kate Bolduan and Washington Post journalist Jonathan Capehart during Power Player Week on the long-running quiz show.

The Louie star will donate his winnings to the Fistula Foundation, a charity that helps women suffering from obstetric fistula, an abnormal hole most often caused by prolonged labor that can form between the vagina and rectum or bladder that leaves patients incontinent.

"He was interested in a women's issue, particularly one where women are underserved," said Fistula Foundation CEO Kate Grant to USA Today of why C.K. partnered up with the charity.

"Fistula patients, they're modern day lepers," she contined. "Too often in places, women don't get Depend pads or even hot showers or multiple changes of clothes, and end up way too often they become outcasts in rural areas."

During Jeopardy!, host Alex Trebek praised C.K. for helping a lesser known cause. "That's not a well-known charity," Trebek mentioned. "Good for you."

"That's why I'm here," C.K. replied.

After announcing a comedy tour set to take place this summer, the 48-year-old admitted that he was unsure if his hit FX comedy Louie would return from hiatus. "I don't think I have stories for that guy anymore," he said.
