The average american consumes 152 pounds of sugar a year, which is roughly 22 teaspoons a day. Kids consume roughly 14 teaspoons a day, which is why 1 in every 4 teens are pre-diabetic. Sugar can have a hand in diabetes, cancer, dementia, depression, acne, infertility, and heart disease. And we are willing putting this into our bodies every day. But why?

Refined Sugar and flour have absolutely no nutritional value and can cause inflammation as well as high blood sugar levels. If you can't go a day without consuming some form of sugar, it may be time to consider detoxing your system. It is not only healthier for your organs, but it can also lead to weight loss as well!

One simple way of detoxing is, like with any other "addiction", cold turkey. Stop eating all sugar, flour, and artificial sweeteners. They slow the metabolism, spike cravings, and store fat. If you can avoid foods that come in a box, package, or can that have a label for 10 days and instead eat fresh meats, vegetables, and fruits then you should be fine after the 10 days. You'll also see an increase in metabolism and body functions as well!

Stop drinking sports drinks like Gatorade, Powerade, etc, as well as juice, soda, tea, and coffee. They have the biggest source of sugar that most people consume on a daily basis and this source basically mainlines the sugar straight to your liver! Just one can of soda a day can incread a child's chance of being obese by 60 percent and a woman's chance of becoming type 2 diabetes by 80 percent.

Protein in a great way to fight sugar cravings. It helps to balance the blood sugar and insulin levels in a "carb-free" way. Instead of candy, tea, coffee to get you moving, eat some nuts, seeds, eggs, fish, chicken, or grass-fed meet for proteins with every meal of the day. This will help you stay fuller longer in between meals and breaks down slower while still creating energy in your body. Keep in mind the average serving size would be 4-6 ounces!

During these 10 days, replace the carbs you'd get from breads with veggies. Not potatoes, sweet potatoes, beets, or winter squash, but definitely eat broccoli, cauliflower, kale, asparagus, peppers, green beans, mushrooms, zucchini, tomatoes, and artichokes as much as you'd like!

Keep your mind off the lack of sugar by consuming good fats during a meal. Eat nuts, seeds, avocadoes, and fish. Add some extra virgin olive oil or coconut butter to your meal as well. This will help balance your blood sugar and make you feel full in a good way.

Make sure to always have a pack of good snacks with you. Fill it with almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, salmon or turkey jerky, unsweetened blueberries, or other nuts. This way, when your sugar drops you're not tempted by vending machines or fast food restaurants.

Before every meal, take five slow deep breaths in to the count of five, out to the count of five. By de-stressing your vagus nerve in your body before eating you'll shift your metabolism from fat storing to fat burning which will help stop belly fat storage and over eating!

Resist gluten and dairy for the 10 days. Most people crave these two products, but a considerable amount of people have a food sensitivity to these items that they are unaware of that can cause inflammation. When the inflammation happens it causes blood sugar imbalances, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. By resisting these 2 items for 10 days, you should see renewed energy as well as relief from craving these items.

And last but definitely not least, make sure to get 8 hours of sleep. Less than 8 hours of sleep leads to a rise in hunger hormones, a decrease in appetite-suppressing hormones and can cause huge cravings for refined sugar and carbs to substitute the energy you're missing. Unfortunately though, that can cause you to have a boost of energy followed by a crash!
